A South Carolina University Turns on Solar Power

The greatest solar project on the college campus in South Carolina has begun generating electricity.

Furman University north of Greenville has switched on the $1.7 million solar village situated on a six-acre tract. It is expected to make about 5 percent of the institution’s energy needs.

Associate vice president Jeff Redderson says it might generate around 15 percent of the university energy need occasionally. Redderson says the institution could save around $75, 000 annually on energy costs.

Duke Energy provided nearly $1 million for the project.
